ART + RESISTANCE: INTRO TO BLOCK PRINTING FOR SOCIAL CHANGE BENEFIT WORKSHOP
(Class taught in English & Spanish)
SUN, APRIL 30th, 1 – 4:30 PM
KLUM HOUSE WORKSHOP: 3808 N Williams Ave. #132
Sliding scale: $25-65 (Pay what you can) +$25 materials fee
Level 1 Block Printing: No previous experience is necessary. As is so often the case, the most important thing is simply to show up.
Join us for a 3-hour workshop led by printer-maker and social activist Thea Gahr to create a block-printed protest sign (on fabric or a tote bag) and learn how to use art and design as powerful tools of resistance. We will build skills that strengthen our contribution to a growing cultural movement, helping to create a world where tolerance, diversity, and creativity form the cornerstones of our society.
Along with learning the technical skills of block printing—carving, tools, inking, application—this workshop will also delve into considerations of design and visual communication, making sure that your message is clear and concise, so you can use your voice to its fullest potential.
We will work, learn, and make together, in solidarity with people all over the globe who are building social movements through art.
JUSTSEEDS ART GRANT
All of the profits from this workshop will go to fund art grants for Justseeds, a printmaking cooperative committed to social, environmental, and political activism. For every $150 collected, we will commission one artist to create a resistance poster that will later be made available FREE to the public for downloading and printing. Our goal is to fund 5-10 artworks with these grants, prioritizing artists who identify as women and people of color.
Bring yourself—your ideas, your rage, your sadness, your story, your hopes, and your desire to express yourself. Can’t wait to see what we make together!
Block Printing Materials Kit Fee: $25
– When you select the date + time, the materials fee will be added.
